Idle Class Magazine Augmented Reality Cover – Director

I was interviewed for a story about augmented reality and somehow was convinced to bring their cover art to life.

Bentonville360: An Interactive Tour – Co-Director

As the City of Bentonville celebrates its sesquicentennial, our project Bentonville360 looks back at the historical sites in downtown Bentonville. Working with Bentonville’s archives, historical society, and city officials, Bentonville360 creates a 360° video experience that allows participants to interact with historical sites on a digital platform. This is an effort to increase tourism, build appreciation for historical sites, and increase traffic at historic locations by appealing to tourists and residents by creating a virtual space that makes learning about history more like a “game” than a chore.

Blank Spaces: An Interactive Timeline – Director

In conjunction with the Bentonville Film Festival, University of Arkansas students produce a short documentary about the film festival's theme. This year, I proposed adding an additional element to capture the history of LGBTQ+ history that viewers may not be familiar with. Lane Kendall (UArk, Graphic Design, 2021) and I developed a five-piece augmented reality experience users could access with their mobile devices. The installation included a seven-foot wall graphic with instructions and visual triggers for the AR experience.

The interactive timeline and documentary exhibited at the 21c Hotel and Museum in Bentonville, AR for a month around the Bentonville Film Festival in early August.

This Art Is Alive! AR Experience - Director

After the success of Blank Spaces, I was approached by Kody Ford, editor of the magazine The Idle Class to create a project around the Black Apple Awards. Working with Lane Kendall again, we took five of the art pieces that would be on display at the Black Apple Awards and brought them to life with augmented reality. We took the paintings apart, animated, warped, spun, and discolored the pieces. It was a massive party and eavesdropping on users experiencing augmented reality for the first time was the highlight.

Interactive "Sad Songs" – Director

My interest in interactive videos has grown steadily since my first introduction to 360° videos during grad school. I've been brainstorming and creating new experiences ever since. The concept for "Sad Songs" was to create a music video where the viewer was the director. My original concept was to have 24 different shots the user could select from by using keys on the keyboard. But I predicted 24 different videos play simultaneously would be to cumbersome so I scaled it down. After some consultations with Wirewax, we worked out the slider concept. Wirewax found solutions to all the hurdles I ran into including syncing and a mobile-friendly version.

Virtual Reality Inside "Need Somebody" – Director

Thanks to Song Exploder, Google Web Experiments, and my friend Doug Blase I was able to create a virtual reality experience that took the user inside the song. Each stem of the song is a glowing bouncing orb that the user can turn on/off but also move closer/further from, which in turn affects the mix. It's truly a surround sound experience in that the direction you look or place you stand can change the aural experience.

360° Music Video "Little Love" – Director

I bought a 360° video camera on a whim and loved the concept, but the coolest piece to me was figuring out how it worked. Once I cracked the technical logistics of 360° video I started thinking of how I could repurpose it. "Little Love" was shot on a Panasonic GH4. I edited the four layers together with Adobe Premiere Pro and then wrote in the metadata that makes the video wrap onto itself.

360° Video: The Cheezies "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" – Director

The Miami University Alumni Association approached me about doing a 360° video after seeing some of the experiments I was working on in grad school and together we crafted this video that was sent out to alumni around the globe. The Miami a cappella group The Cheezies sing a special Valentine’s Day song at The Great Seal in the Armstrong Student Center.
